The 2013/2014 winter has seen a remarkable irruption
of snowy owls into the northern U.S.
Here are a few shots of one of the birds that I was lucky enough to see.

August 1st, 2012Falconry…
March 7th, 2012I got to spend the first beautiful spring day outside chasing hawks with falconer Carolyn Standlee-Hanson, of Phoenix Fire Falconry, her husband Richard, and friend Barbara O’Brien (Barbara O’Brien Photography). What a fantastic way to usher in spring. Thank you to all involved. It was a splendid day. Here are some of the day’s favorites.
“Sassy” (a Harris’s Hawk) and Carolryn. Ready for flight.
This is “Hit-Girl” she’s a young Red-Tailed Hawk
If you look closely here you can see the Third Eyelid (nictitating membrane)

May 22nd, 2011Owls
May 22nd, 2011I’ve been photographing these baby owls since last sunday. One fell from the nest late Sunday night last week, and climbed up a nearby tree leaving one little owlet occupying the original nest tree. One week later both seem to be doing quite well. Despite the mobbing of Crows and Jays, and the serious eyeing of an attentive Cooper’s Hawk.
